BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby Fire spent much of the morning cleaning up a fuel spill and it was all thanks to a thief.
A man was siphoning fuel from a parked semi-truck around 3 a.m.. The suspect was spooked by someone passing by and took off without capping the hose.
Burnaby Fire Assistant Chief Ken Moore says the gas started flowing down Lowland Drive near North Fraser Way.
"The fuel was leaking down the road towards a river, so our HazMat crew went down and put up a dike and they stopped the flow."

SOUTHBOUND lanes on Kewdale Rd have re-opened after emergency services cleaned a fuel spill following a crash involving two trucks.
The road had been closed between Marchesi St and Abernethy Rd, Kewdale, about 1pm today to allow Fire and Emergency Services to clean up diesel fuel that had been spilling from one of the trucks.
No one was seriously injured in the smash. Police reopened the road about 2pm

Police have shut down one lane on the southbound side of Wantagh Avenue to investigate what they are describing as a suspicious fuel spill.
According to Nassau County Seventh Precinct officers, the source of the spill is unknown, and police set up flares to block the southbound right lane across from the new Wantagh Starbucks.
The spill caused traffic backup on both sides of Wantagh Avenue, and sand trucks were dispersed to the scene to help contain the spill.

Chicago – About 150 gallons of fuel spilled in a maintenance area at O’Hare Airport Friday morning.
The approximately 150 gallons fuel for snow ploughs spilled from a tanker about 6 a.m., Fire Media spokesman Kevin McGregor said. He said vacuum trucks had it cleaned up within an hour and that the spill was in a maintenance area, not on a runway.
A Level 1 Hazmat called for the spill was secured at about 7 a.m., he said.

A MAJOR road between Blackburn and Preston was closed this morning following an accident.
The A677 Preston New Road shut following an accident and an oil spillage at 4.50am from the A59 Whalley Road to Intack Lane by BAE Systems and Samlesbury Hall.
Drivers headed towards Blackburn were diverted along the A59 then through Mellor to get back on to Preston New Road.
The road was reopened shortly before 8am.
Police said VW Golf lost control on a bend and hit a wall and then a HGV. Officers said there were no serious injuries as a result of the smash.
