LONG CREEK — A gas tanker truck spill near the Georgia/South Carolina border Saturday sent hundreds of gallons of gas into a farm stream and completely shut down U.S. 76 in the area for the whole day.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. when a driver rolled off the shoulder of the road in Rabun County, Ga., on his way into Oconee County.
The highway was expected to be closed through Saturday night, and drivers were asked to avoid the area because of backups that exceeded eight hours at times.
Oconee County Fire Department Chief Charlie King said about 800 gallons, roughly 10 percent of the tanker’s capacity, had spilled. Much of the gas went into a stream, but the spill was contained there using booms.
“We were concerned it would move from the small farm stream into the nearby Chattooga River,” King said. “We were able to keep it in the stream.”
Officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the South Carolina Department of Health Environmental Control and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division were on hand to monitor the response

SOUTHBOUND lanes on Kewdale Rd have re-opened after emergency services cleaned a fuel spill following a crash involving two trucks.
The road had been closed between Marchesi St and Abernethy Rd, Kewdale, about 1pm today to allow Fire and Emergency Services to clean up diesel fuel that had been spilling from one of the trucks.
No one was seriously injured in the smash. Police reopened the road about 2pm

Tanker Overturned On Hwy 76 In Ga Leaking Fuel

Crews reopened US 76 in Rabun County, Ga. late Saturday. A tanker truck overturned early in the morning near the Long Creek community of Oconee County, Sc. It happened about one mile across the Georgia state line.
The driver of the tanker was taken to the Oconee Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Officials say the truck lost nearly 800 gallons of liquid. The fuel did make its way to a small stream and was contained within 500 yards from the wreck. There was not any contamination to the Chattooga River.
The American Red Cross provided assistance to approximately 50 fire, rescue, hazmat, and forestry personal.
